Faraway House: A Jewel of Architectural Revival in Adelaide

I snapped this on Kodak Porta 160 over the 2023 to 2024 summer. Just a random shot, mainly because I like the building. The style has a great revitalised art deco feel to it, seen a lot in Adelaide and it is just great. So I did a bit of research into the more recent work on it. Nestled in Adelaide’s vibrant CBD on Franklin Street, Faraway House stands as a testament to architectural ingenuity and cultural preservation. This unassuming yet charming building, reminiscent of a fairytale setting, has a history that stretches back to the 1880s. What began as a modest store evolved into a modern commercial office in the 1950s and has recently been revitalized by the talented team at Tectvs, one of the leading Adelaide architects.

A Storied Past

The site, once home to the offices of AJ & PA McBride Pty Ltd, pastoralists, carries a unique legacy. Its name, Faraway House, pays homage to Faraway Hill Station, reflecting the pastoral roots of its former tenants. Originally constructed in the 1880s, the building underwent modernization in 1953 by Dean W. Berry and Gilbert Architects. Despite its transformation over the decades, its charm endured. Today, Faraway House serves as the offices for Burke Urban Development, continuing its role as a functional and meaningful space in Adelaide.

Tectvs: Breathing New Life Into Faraway House

In a bold move to adapt the building for the 21st century, Burke Urban enlisted the expertise of Tectvs, a renowned name in architects Adelaide. The project, part of a three-stage redevelopment plan, has transformed Faraway House into a sleek, modern workspace while respecting its historical essence.

Tectvs introduced a third storey, ensuring the building’s design evolved to meet modern needs without compromising its character. The narrow, introverted interior was reimagined to create an open, airy office environment. Through innovative design techniques, Tectvs cleverly gave the illusion of expanded internal space, proving their mastery in blending functionality with aesthetics.

Modern Features for Modern Needs

The redevelopment included significant upgrades to building services and addressed all modern safety requirements. The interior redesign by Tectvs not only opened up the space but also infused it with a contemporary vibe that aligns with the bustling energy of Franklin Street.
