A rare and extraordinary Leica M prototype has shattered records at the 45th Leitz Photographica Auction, fetching an incredible €2.04 million ($2.22 million USD). The auction, held on November 25, 2024, marked the 70th anniversary of Leica’s legendary M series – a line of cameras that revolutionized photography when first introduced in 1954.
The $2.22 Million Leica M Prototype
Identified as lot number 76, this Leica M prototype is a unique gem dating back to the late 1940s, before the official release of the iconic Leica M3. Produced between 1948 and 1949, it stands out for its combination of machine-made and hand-crafted components and the absence of a serial number. The prototype was paired with a Leica M-Mount Elmar 3.5/3.5cm lens and represents one of the earliest known models leading to the iconic Leica M series.
Back then, as at today, Leica was committed to building the very best optically performing cameras. A 1940s Leica will hold up against modern cameras with the optical performance in sharpness and detail. Leica does this, and many other things far better than other camera brands.
Initially estimated at between €600,000 and €700,000, the prototype exceeded all expectations, more than tripling its valuation and setting a new benchmark for rare camera auctions.
Other Auction Highlights
While the €2.22 million Leica M stole the spotlight, several other rare and noteworthy Leica items also attracted impressive bids:
Lot 79 – Leica M Prototype Collection
This unique set of ten prototype Leica M bodies, or “chassis,” showcased the evolution of the Leica M series over 17 years of development.
Estimated between €300,000 and €340,000, the collection ultimately sold for €432,000, reflecting the deep interest in Leica’s design history.
Leica M2 in Gray Paint (Serial Number 1005769)
One of only 20 units produced for the U.S. Air Force in Europe in 1960, this camera is a collector’s dream.
It sold for an impressive €900,000, far surpassing its pre-auction estimate of €500,000 to €600,000.
Charity Highlight: Leica M6J
Continuing the Leitz Photographica Auction’s tradition of charity sales, a Leica M6J, released in 1994 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the M series, fetched €9,000.
Proceeds from this sale were donated to “Licht ins Dunkel,” a charitable initiative that supports families in need.
Celebrating Leica’s Legacy
The record-breaking sale of the Leica M prototype not only highlights the camera’s historical significance but also reaffirms the enduring value of Leica craftsmanship. As one of the most renowned brands in photographic history, Leica’s timeless innovations continue to inspire collectors, enthusiasts, and photographers worldwide.
The next Leitz Photographica Auction is already scheduled for June 26, 2025, at Leitz Park in Wetzlar, Germany. This highly anticipated event will coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Leica I – the groundbreaking camera that forever changed the world of photography.
